Television and Technology Center

Sterling, VA

54,000 SF

This unique and impressive state-of-the-art facility is home for network origination of Discovery’s US Networks and BBC America.  Unique because this all digital facility seamlessly combines the company’s IT and television platforms.  Impressive in its dynamic spaces, including a 360-degree Master Control Center.

The award-winning design started with an empty 54,000 SF industrial building three miles north of Dulles International Airport.  An existing building was selected to meet completion and on-air deadlines, but created spatial challenges for accommodating the special needs of the IT and television groups.

Housed within the building are several specialized functions including a live events control room, transmission operations center, ingest suites, audio suites, duplication and record rooms, media library for 120,000 tapes and digital servers, broadcast and IT data center, and an IT network operations center.

One of the ancillary functions of the facility is to function as a disaster recovery site for its headquarters building in Silver Spring, MD.  Individual conference rooms and an adjacent café incorporate movable partitions and extensive power and LAN connections to accommodate an influx of staff during an emergency event.
